Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1275 to 1300 CE. A pair of hand pecked maul or axe heads with a groove that encircles the entirety of the handle - hence the moniker "full grooved axe head." The full groove enabled the stone to be bound to the end of a wooden pole for use as a chopping tool or a blunt hammer via the rounded butt ends. Such axes have been produced for millennial throughout North America, but these appear to be a volcanic or porous basalt stone from the southwest without the characteristic polish we see on hardstone axes. The notch on the larger maul was the area for knotting the sinew cord. Size: 4.5" L x 3" W x 3.5" H (11.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
