Description:

Native American, Southwestern USA, Colorado or New Mexico, Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloans, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. A deep, steep-walled ceramic bowl with a large band around its upper interior decorated in the stylized geometric motifs of the black-on-white Mesa Verde style of this region. Interlocking black steps and triangles form a complex pattern there. The exterior is left smooth and white, undecorated. This vessel was made by hand coiling pottery, smoothing it, and baking it in an open air fire. The motifs may represent families or clans, but since no two vessels from this culture look identical, they may also reflect the personal preferences of the women who made them. Size: 6.4" W x 2.9" H (16.3 cm x 7.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private C. Webster collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico USA acquired before 2000
