Description:

Native American, Southwestern USA, Colorado, Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloans, ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A beautiful seed bowl, made from a white/grey mineral paste clay by women artisans. The interior is ringed by a large repeated motif of steps, perhaps meant to evoke the steps into kivas and cliff dwellings that constituted monumental architecture in this culture. In a double band down the exterior is a series of delicately painted bird tracks, a whimsical touch on a beautiful bowl. Size: 6.25" W x 2.75" H (15.9 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
