Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. This eah-tone textile fragment is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in crimson, brown, lime, teal, gold, and fuchsia hues. The composition includes fourteen humorous simian-like faces with bulbous disc-shaped eyes, miniscule noses, and amicable smiles. The row of faces is outlined above and below by two thick red bands of fiber. Mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 10.75" L x 1.25" W (27.3 cm x 3.2 cm).

Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
