Description:

Classical Antiquities. Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A red-figure vessel with a trefoil spout (thus allowing liquid to be poured in any of three directions) decorated via the red-figure technique with a profiled depiction of a satyr, his somewhat bestial grimace with a furrowed brow, prominent ears, wild hair, and a full beard and mustache. Flanking his visage is a pair of abstract palmette tendrils. Although we cannot see the rest of his body, one can just imagine this half-man, half-goat creature playing his pipe, roaming the mountains, and chasing maenads in a Dionysian scene. Size: 2.75" W at widest point x 3.625" H (7 cm x 9.2 cm)
