Description:

Near East / Central Asia, Northern Iran, Marlik or Cheragh-Ali Teppe region, Amlash / Amardi culture, Iron Age, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A petite pottery pouring vessel featuring a tubular spout and a handle with a restored horse head motif. While the restoration incorporated a horse head, evidence that this was the original design on this pot is unclear. However, bovine and other ungulate motifs were frequently used in pottery from this region, often appearing as handles or spouts, blending symbolic meaning with functionality. Amardi Iron Age pottery is known for its burnished pieces that often survived intact due to burial practices - the people of this region constructed cist graves - underground chambers lined with stone slabs - where offerings such as pottery were placed alongside the deceased. Size: 6" L x 3.5" W x 3.75" H (15.2 cm x 8.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: Private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
