Description:

Ancient Near East, northern Iran, Amlash, ca. 9th to 8th century BCE. An intriguing leaded bronze vessel with a prominent spout, resting on a rounded bottom and rising to a spherical body and shoulders. The short neck supports a wide mouth and a long channel-spout that projects outward. Opposite from the spout is a handle, cast separately, and fastened to the body and neck. The surface is a rich russet color underneath areas of green patina. Vessels like this were likely used to pour ritual libations during religious ceremonies, perhaps during funerary rituals as many have been found in burial sites. Size: 7.75" W x 4.1" H (19.7 cm x 10.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
