Description:

Native American, Southeast, Mississippian, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. Terracotta head pots like this example are quite rare and highly collectible works of Native American visual culture. They were only made for a short time period at the end of the Mississippian cultural period and the verism of the visages is uncanny, as we see in this example, pointing to the keen technique and artistry possessed by the sculptors. This example presents an expressive face with large, realistic facial features and a coiffure that continues to the tapered spout comprised of stylized geometric motifs. Rich red pigment remains on the surface. Size: 6.75" W x 7.75" H (17.1 cm x 19.7 cm)
