Description:

North America, Western United States, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. This sheath, decorated with glass seed beads, was designed to hold a knife made of steel with a brass bolster and cow horn panels riveted to the tang. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, European traders and settlers exchanged iron knives with Native American communities. These iron and steel knives quickly became essential tools for hunting, cooking, and crafting, and were highly prized possessions often kept in beaded sheaths. The beadwork on this sheath is likely not Native American-made, as suggested by its design elements and execution. A weasel pelt and horsehair cone tassels dangle from the sheath, adding to its decoration. Size of knife: 7.75" L x 1" W (19.7 cm x 2.5 cm); in sheath: 8.5" L x 2" W (21.6 cm x 5.1 cm)
