Description:

Ancient Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A graceful vessel comprised of stunning cobalt blue translucent glass, its form presenting an ovoid body with numerous vertical ribs that extend into a wide tubular neck with a splayed lip and folded rim, all upon a concave base. A single handle bridges the rim to the shoulder. The saturated cobalt blue hues are quite striking, and the form presents a marvelous silhouette. This piece exemplifies the beauty of ancient glass, its sublime form and artistic aesthetic of the caliber that impressed Seneca who marveled in his "Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium" (65 CE) that a glassblower could "by his breath alone, fashion glass into numerous shapes which could scarcely be accomplished by the most skillful hand." Size: 1.875" W x 3" H (4.8 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex Noele and Ronald Mele collection, Ancient Works of Art, New York, USA, 1987; ex Geoffrey Sowash collection; Private European Collection
