Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North America, United States, Almost Paper Fashions by Flower Modes, ca. 1965. A "Beau Knot Beach Shift" dress created by "Almost Paper Fashions" in the 1960s. Short and sassy, this sleeveless dress and its matching neckerchief boast a vibrant floral pattern of pink, orange, and yellow hues that reflected the new taste for Pop Art in the 1960s. The dress still has its label attached to the neckline indicating that it is size small and made in the U.S.A. It is also accompanied by its original illustrated hot pink paper label. Made of rayon and nylon, this "Almost Paper" dress was part of a popular, short-lived mid-century fashion craze. Paper dresses (and almost paper dresses) were playfully whimsical and captured the spirit of Pop Art. Today they are quite rare, and examples are usually only found in museums such as London's Victoria and Albert Museum and New York's Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technolog thanks to fashion historians and curators. Size: 36" L x 26" W (91.4 cm x 66 cm)

According to the curatorial team at the Victoria and Albert Museum, "In the 1960s, society fell in love with the idea of progress. Young people with disposable incomes embraced the cult of the new, becoming keen consumers of fun, informal and fast-changing trends. This appetite for novelty fueled one of the decade's most frivolous fashion crazes: the paper dress.

The perfect expression of fashion's own fickleness, these two-dimensional shift dresses were cheap and 'disposable' – designed to be worn only once or twice – and proved ideal vehicles for the bold, graphic prints that had become so popular during the decade." (Victoria and Albert Museum website)
