Description:

North America, Alaska, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 40,000 years ago. A fossilized ivory tusk fragment from a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), on a custom wood display stand, the piece is a segment near the middle of the tusk. The width suggests this may have been a juvenile animal. Mammoths are one of the most memorable examples of Ice Age megafauna that most people will instantly recognize; their tusks are a special part of any prehistoric and fossil collection! The tusk is cut and the exterior and exposed ends of this tusk are beautifully polished to bring out the stunning colorations of the enamel and cementum. These striking hues occur through the process of mineralization - after the animal's death this tusk lay in soil containing minerals that turned the once white ivory into mottled brown hue. The intact cross section also reveals the distinctive crosshatched graining known as Schreger lines. Size: 10" L x 1.75" W (25.4 cm x 4.4 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
