Native American, North America, Alaska, Inuit peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved mask depicting a shaman flying through the air with bent arms facing forward, a raised and alert head, and bowed legs as if perhaps free-falling. A large, minimalist visage centered on the shaman's back is a sizable representation of his spirit or soul that is experiencing the flight along with the corporeal body. The feet are bound together with a slender wooden bar, and the arms are attached via slender dowels. Size (mask): 19.5" L x 10.5" W x 1.25" H (49.5 cm x 26.7 cm x 3.2 cm); (display case): 3.6" L x 17.6" W x 25.6" H (9.1 cm x 44.7 cm x 65 cm)

Provenance: private West Jordon, Utah, USA collection, acquired from an antiques sale, Boulder, Colorado, USA; ex-Robert Knight collection, acquired while working on the Alaska Highway Project in the 1940s
