Description:

**First Time At Auction**

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beaded crown (ade) created for a Yoruba oba or king of a classic conical form with a removeable bird finial atop. The cotton cloth surface is covered in thousands of colorful glass beads that form Anthropomorphic faces. Headwear like this example, known as an "ade oba" (or adenla) was worn as a crown by the reigning king (oba) to symbolize his wealth, power, influence, and responsibility over those he governed. The faces refer to the obas of the past, and the bird on top symbolizes a creation narrative and the mediation role of the oba between his people and the gods. The hanging beads are a veil to protect followers from the king's supernatural powers. Size: 8" Diameter x 17.3" H (20.3 cm x 43.9 cm); 26" H (66 cm) on included custom stand.
