Description:

Africa, Burnika Faso, Winiama people, ca. late 19th to mid 20th century CE. This is a strikingly carved animal mask with strong geometry of form -- swirling circles mark the eyes, triangles emphasize the antlers and forehead. The mouth, full of teeth, gapes in an expression of fright or shock. The figure has large horns atop its head with patterns painted in black, white, and red pigments. This stylized form makes it difficult to know what animal it represents -- but it may in fact be a mystical chimera creature. Masks carved of wood by the Winiama represent bush spirits, or spirits that take animal forms. Size: 28.5" H (72.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex- New York Gallery, Ex Sebastian Fernandez NYC coll. London Collection of Peter Sloane. Apr 2007.
