Description:

North Africa, Algeria, / Mali, Sahara region, Berber / Tuareg, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A large and ornate iron lock and key for a saddle or jewelry bag, the rectangular surface is covered with decorative brass panels. To open, the key is inserted then dragged along the slot / groove, compressing a spring that pushes the bolt and pin out. This type of lock was not only for safe keeping, but served as an ornamental object, the surface etched with linear motifs and the brass colored with elements such as zinc and nickel to create contrasting silvery and coppery hues. Size of larger (lock): 6.5" L x 3.5" W (16.5 cm x 8.9 cm)
