Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Suku, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden initiation mask of highly stylized form that is surmounted by a charming quadruped creature. The face is decorated with white and blue pigment that stands out against the deep red pigment adorning much of the remaining surfaces, and bands of incised crosshatching stretch across the coiffure. A tall raffia skirt or beard is attached to the lower periphery. Size: 16" L x 13" W x 19" H (40.6 cm x 33 cm x 48.3 cm); 21.25" H (54 cm) on included custom stand.
