Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Salampasu people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden Kasangu face mask with an intimidating countenance, sharpened teeth and bulging brow, the head topped with interwoven spheres of cane fibers. The Kasangu is a type of mask worn exclusively by warrior men that earned the right after circumcision and initiation to the Mugongo society. The Mugongo brotherhood protected Salampasu communities, and within the society there were different levels a man could achieve through certain deeds, such as killing an enemy in battle. Size: 10.5" L x 9" W (26.7 cm x 22.9 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand.
