Description:

Central Africa, Rwanda, ca. 20th century CE. A coiled basket made from sisal fiber, wrapped over a bundled grass foundation. The weaving technique and intricate patterns bear a resemblance to traditional Native American basketry, though this piece is distinctly African in origin. Sisal, derived from the agave plant Agave sisalana, was introduced to Africa in the 19th century and became a widely used material in basketry due to its durability, strength, and flexibility. In Rwanda and other parts of Central Africa, sisal is favored for its ability to be dyed in vibrant colors, making it ideal for decorative as well as practical items. This basket reflects the artistry and skill of Rwandan weavers, blending utility with aesthetic beauty. Size: 9" Diameter x 3.5" H (22.9 cm x 8.9 cm)
