Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden karikpo mask with beautiful spiraling horns and vibrant red pigment. The face is elongated with a rounded snout, ovoid eye holes, and piercings around the rim to attach the mask to the wearer or to a costume. The lengthy horns spiral to pointed tips and help envision the majestic antelope. Karikpo masks are traditionally used early in the agricultural season as a primary figure in ceremonies that honor the local founding ancestor. Size: 3.875" L x 4.2" W x 14.75" H (9.8 cm x 10.7 cm x 37.5 cm)
