Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso, Mossi, ca. early 20th century CE. A wooden figure representing a deceased chief who stands on slightly bent legs with his hands on his hips upon an integral base, all carved from a single piece of wood. The figure presents traits very characteristic of Mossi sculpture, including its long torso, fan shaped narrow head, and narrow face with abstract features, of the type that bring the visages of modernist Modigliani's creations. This figure was likely created for use in village ceremonies honoring the chief. Regardless of size, function, sex, or material, all Mossi figures, with the exception of dolls, are called ninande (ninana - plural) which literally translates to "modeled figure" - and oh what a finely modeled figure this one is! A superb example with nice patina. Size: 3.25" L x 2.5" W x 11.25" H (8.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 28.6 cm)
