Description:

Eastern Africa, Kenya or Tanzania, Maasai peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A steel spearhead featuring a tubular socket and a lengthy blade with two rounded, flat shoulders that taper inward toward the point. At the opposite end of the wooden pole is an iron tip attached via a socket; this thick piece is rounded and displays several incised notches just above the conical socketing shaft. Spears like this were among a Maasai warrior's most prized possessions, used to defend herds and the community against predators. Size: 66.5" L x 1.2" W (168.9 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection; ex-Ned Jacob Studio collection, acquired from the Maasai in the 1970s
