Description:

Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luba, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure representing an individual who appears to be androgynous, with a finely incised beard, small breasts, hands placed upon a large perhaps pregnant belly, and a penis. This figure displays the sensibility of Luba artists, with its finely carved curvaceous form, long tubular neck, and an enlarged head adorned by a magnificently elaborate coiffure. The black oily patina is the result of years and years of libations. A lovely example. Size: 3.25" W x 11.25" H (8.3 cm x 28.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex Peter Arnovick Collection, Los Altos CA
