Zambia, Lovale people, early-mid 20th century CE. This is a beautiful hard wood carved mask with pyroengraved designs on the forehead, nose, and cheeks. The Lovale people, part of the Bantu language group of peoples, continue to practice traditional belief systems which includes witchcraft, voodoo, and masquerades performed by the Maskishi dancers to welcome young men who have just undergone circumcision and therefore become men back to the tribe from their quest in the bush. Each mask represent specific characters in the traditional story performed in the dance. Size: 8.8" H (22.4 cm)
