West Africa, Ivory Coast, Wobe, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand carved and hand painted wooden mask of the Wobe peoples, one of the two We cultures (comprised of the Wobe and neighboring Gere) who reside on the western frontier of the Ivory Coast. Though separate tribes, they share many customs and beliefs as well as the name We which means "men who easily forgive." This mask, used for judicial ceremonies, shows traits characteristic of Wobe masks including protruding eyes and enlarged lips. The visage is also painted with golden yellow, royal blue, and scarlet hued natural pigments. Perforations around the periphery. Size: 6.5" W x 8.5" H (16.5 cm x 21.6 cm)
