Description:

Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, early 20th century CE. This is a fairly unique Igbo mask used in the Okperegede Masquerade. The mask bears the hallmarks of Igbo carving -- the diagonal lines under each eye and the scalloped hairline -- but has some unique touches, probably added because each mask is uniquely shaped by individual artisans. Those touches include the jutting, geometric chin, and the small, round mouth. There seems to have been original hair attached to the round top of the head. The Okperegede Masquerade is when dancers -- all men -- portray the reunion of the living community and their ancestors. Size: 8.4" W x 14.75" H (21.3 cm x 37.5 cm)
