Description:

West Africa, Burkino Faso/Mali region, Gan people (pre-Lobi peoples), ca. 17th century CE. An ectomorphic, cast iron figure created by a Dogon blacksmith of Mali. Cast metal figures like this example demonstrate the technical skill and artistry that Gan blacksmiths possessed. This figure was created via the lost wax process, and is small enough to have been cast solid. The Lobi and pre-Lobi peoples are understood to have animist beliefs involving ritualistic interactions with ancestral spirits which this piece may represent. Size: 5.875" H (14.9 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
