Africa, Republic of Benin, Fon/ Dahomey, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure of a standing man, made to be a fetish figure with a receptacle carved in his chest, holding a walking stick on one hand and another implement in his right hand, and looking straight ahead with boldly delineated facial features creating an expressive visage. The entire surface presents an age patina with remains of pigment and other ritual substances that were poured over and applied to the figure. He stands with slightly bent knees upon an integral platform; below the platform. Size: 10.625" H (27 cm)

  • Condition: Partially drilled hole on top of head presumably for attaching an ornament. Age crack to face. One section reattached to base. Right forearm reattached. Losses to upper end of walking stick. Encrustation and patina from ritual substances. Normal surface wear with some abraded areas commensurate with age.
