Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A ceremonial steel knife or short sword, known as an ikula (also ikul), featuring a broad petaloid blade and a stocky wood handle with a rounded knob. The carved handle displays raised linear motifs covered with stamped metal wires, almost completely flattened into the surface. The handle's patterns likely draw inspiration from the renowned Kuba textiles. These abstract geometric designs often signify an individual's social and marital status, or authority. Used primarily for ceremonial purposes, ikula knives were worn by elite men and chiefs at court as a symbol of masculine power. Size: 13.5" L x 3.75" W (34.3 cm x 9.5 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
