Central Africa, Gabon and Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ambete (also Mbete) peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden reliquary figure exhibiting wonderful age and pigment. The male figure is covered with a woven raffia skirt around his waist, holds both arms tightly against the cylindrical body, and has a hinged door on the verso to keep inside any placed offerings. The conical head exhibits snail shell eyes and a gaping mouth while the figure as a whole is decorated with red and white pigment. Size: 6.875" L x 7.5" W x 27.5" H (17.5 cm x 19 cm x 69.8 cm)

  • Condition: Contents within body are covered in earthen deposits; door to interior does not lock. Loss to toes on proper right foot and small areas of woven skirt as shown. Abrasions and fading to pigment, with small chips to wood, otherwise in great condition. Nice patina.
