West Africa, Mali, Dogon peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figure of a stylized and abstract form shown standing atop an integral circular plinth. The slender figure stands upright with prominent genitalia and hands resting on broad hips. The thick neck supports the bulbous, helmet-shaped head. Figures like this example were perhaps guardian figures meant to protect households from evil magic. Size: 3.25" W x 14.625" H (8.3 cm x 37.1 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
