Description:

West Africa, Mali, Bandiagara region, Dogon peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A carved wooden window shutter or small door, used on buildings or storage facilities such as granaries, composed of two large panels joined at the center with wood slats and secured by iron nails. The surface is adorned with relief carvings of stylized lizards and human figures representing past generations of ancestors. These carvings were not only decorative but also believed to imbue the building with the protective power of the ancestors. A wooden sliding latch is positioned along one edge near the center, while projecting tabs on the opposite edge allow for mounting the shutter within a window frame. For shipments of oversize items, Artemis Gallery will assist the buyer in working with a third-party shipping provider. For shipments outside of the USA, customs and duties may apply upon entry into said country, and this fee, if any, is the buyer's responsibility.
