Description:

West Africa, Liberia and Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Dan peoples, ca. mid to late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden mask known as a "kagle" (spirit mask), featuring raffia and feathers attached to the chin. The stylized design presents a striking angular form, with a jutting forehead, tubular eyes, an elongated wedge-shaped nose, and snout-like lips accented by striped markings reminiscent of a baboon. Perforations along the edges allow attachment to a larger costume or headdress, while the hollowed verso is crafted for wear. In Dan culture, human face masks are used to embody dangerous forest spirits and animals. The kagle, known for its aggressive and erratic behavior during village ceremonies, intentionally disrupts social gatherings. Despite its chaotic presence, the mask's true purpose is to teach the value of discipline and order, emphasizing the importance of maintaining societal harmony. Size of wood mask: 7" L x 7" W x 12" H (17.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 30.5 cm); tassel adds an additional: 8" L (20.3 cm)
