Description:

Africa, Ivory Coast, Dan culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A carved wooden mask in the form of a bird with slit eyes, a long, curved beak, black pigment topped by white feathery remains at the crown, and perforations all along the periphery. As is characteristic of most Dan masks, the face is concave with a high domed forehead, and rather than the usual pointed chin featured on human visages, the beak presents a pointed tip. Incised striated markings highlighted in white (perhaps from organic pigments, perhaps from libations) add definition to the contours of the face, beak, and eyes. A wonderful Dan mask, one of the most important forms of visual culture created by the Dan peoples. Nice patina has developed over the years. Size: 5.75" W x 12" H (14.6 cm x 30.5 cm)
