Description:

Southern Africa, Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chokwe peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A wooden stool covered with a dried hide seat cover, and the lower legs and struts decorated with carved animals, heads, and an object that might be drums. The side rungs are attached to the legs using a mortise-and-tenon method, and the stretched hide is sewn along the underside of the seat. Chairs and stools with carvings of everyday life or symbols that denoted status and power. Size: 10" L x 10" W x 8" H (25.4 cm x 25.4 cm x 20.3 cm)
