Description:

Africa, Southeastern Nigeria, Ogoni, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely carved painted wood mask of the Ogoni culture who are known for their human faced masks with hinged, articulated jaws as we see in this example. The hinged jaw allows the mask to "speak" and is attached to the visage with fiber cords on both the left and right sides. Typical of Ogoni masks, this example has a petite, oval face with a small and wide upturned nose, three vertical panels incised with scarification marks on the forehead, full lips, a hinged jaw, and a finely detailed coiffure. Perched atop the forehead is a perky bird perches with its raised tailfeathers. A fabulous, classic Ogoni mask. Such masks are used during Christmas festivals and funerals according to scholar Jean Baptiste-Bacquart. Size: 4.75" W x 10.5" H (12.1 cm x 26.7 cm)
