Description:

Mali/Niger, Bura-Asinda-Sikka culture, ca. 3rd to 11th century CE. A modeled terracotta head with a long nose, applied pierced ears, a wide open mouth, subtly protruding chin, and pair of fillets on the back representing a plaited coiffure - the head resolving to an elongated neck with that shows a small section of an impressed collar. This piece was created by the Bura-Asinda-Sikka culture along the lower Niger River valley in Niger and Burkina Faso. Examples like this were initially discovered in 1975, many by farmers who were preparing their fields. Hence many Bura Asinda-Sikka sculptural works were accidentally broken by shovels before serious archaeological excavations began in 1983. A nice example from this understudied culture. Custom stand. Size: 2.75" W x 4.5" H (7 cm x 11.4 cm)
