Description:

Africa, Guinea, Baga, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden mask depicting a monkey holding a small offering bowl in both hands. The simian's visage is so expressive with its wide open eyes, rounded concave ears, long protruding snout meticulously incised with striations, and toothy grin. Connecting the monkey's head to the body is a long, slender neck that is whimsically detailed with carved coils. Hollowed so that the mask may be worn on the head, with eye holes perforated through the chest, this mask would make quite the entrance. The surface still shows red, tan, and white pigment as well as great patina, the interior patina revealing that this mask was indeed worn and used. Perforations down the sides for attaching to costume or ornaments. A fabulous and quite rare example! Size: 14.5" L x 7" W x 19.5" H (36.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 49.5 cm)
