Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Very sweet terracotta depiction of Eros standing upon an integral base, right hand outstretched holding a small staff, left hand resting on a rock outcropping. Eros wears a long cloak draped over his back and fastened at his neck, wings emerging behind and above his back, nude save his cloak, long flowing hair over his neck and pulled tight on top of his head. Size: 4" W x 6.5" H (10.2 cm x 16.5 cm).

Eros was one of the most favorite subjects of Roman potters - and evidently Roman patrons of the arts. He is shown in a variety of poses and always depicted as a youthful man/child. Over the centuries he morphed into Cupid who we still celebrate each year on February 14th.
