Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of squat, circular form with a compressed spherical body, a stirrup-shaped handle, and a tapered cylindrical spout with a thick, everted rim. The surface is painted using a resist or negative painting technique to create the crustaceans seen on both sides of the body in a umber red hue that contrasts with the beige slip. The curled tails, segmented abdomen and carapace shell suggests some type of lobster or shrimp! The Moche were dependent on the sea and marine life for sustenance and worshipped a creator deity known as Ai Apaec, who could harness the power of the sea! Size: 6" Diameter x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
