Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV to V, ca. 400 to 800 CE. A mold-formed and highly burnished pottery vessel with a flat base, a wide body with a stirrup-shaped handle arching over the top, and a projecting cylindrical spout. The vessel body is shaped to resemble a recumbent jaguar with retracted legs, a sinuous tail, and a raised head with cupped ears and bulging eyes. The gaping mouth is lined with several fangs that surround the protruding tongue. Hues of saffron yellow and orange-red imbue the composition with a wondrous presentation. Size: 7.375" L x 3.375" W x 7.8" H (18.7 cm x 8.6 cm x 19.8 cm)

Provenance: private Copeland collection, Boulder, Colorado, USA, acquired before 1990
