Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, early Postclassic period, ca. 1000 to 1100 CE. A hand-built pottery jar with a petite circular base supported by two enormous front paws. The globular body has a tall neck, a flared rim, and a stylized jaguar head projecting from the front of the shoulder. Plumbate pottery, created during the Postclassic period, is a highly distinctive glazed style of pottery that spread throughout Mesoamerica and Central America and has fascinated archaeologists, explorers, and collectors alike. While plumbate pieces are typically grey in color, this vessel exhibits hues of russet, mandarin, espresso, and other earth tones due to the specific mineral contents within the clay. Size: 4.5" L x 3.625" W x 3.4" H (11.4 cm x 9.2 cm x 8.6 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
