Description:

Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 3rd centuries BCE. A mold-made ceramic figure of the god Attis, often mistaken for Eros. Attis is portrayed as a youth wearing a draped himation that exposes much of the body, and stands coyly, hands behind his back; he has small, square wings high on his body and wears a Phrygian cap. Unruly locks of hair peek out from underneath it. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.25" W x 7.95" H (8.3 cm x 20.2 cm); height on stand: 9.5" (24.1 cm)

In the late 4th century BCE, the Greeks created a cult around Attis, who had been an Anatolian deity for nearly one thousand years at that point. The god, consort of Cybele, was famous for castrating himself, and his priests were eunuchs. His ancient worship relates the story of his self-mutilation, death, and resurrection to the agricultural cycle of yearly planting and harvest.
