Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Finely carved and string cut from a stunning piece of mottled greenstone, a pendant depicting a seated monkey presenting an endearing pose with hands placed upon upraised knees, a cute-as-a- button facial expression connoting surprise or worship, and a long upraised tail extending above the head. Nicely detailed - note the digits (both fingers and toes) and the partially drilled eyes and open mouth. In addition to its intriguing figural form, the inherent beauty of the stone is impressive - its blue-green hues interspersed with caramel brown and white inclusions. Laterally perforated behind the neck for suspension. Size: 2.5" L (6.4 cm)
