Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Quite the contortionist, this hand-built pottery acrobat rests on his groin, his arms in front of his massive, upturned head, with both legs curved upwards behind him, almost touching the back of his head! His flexible abdomen is curved in an almost unnatural manner, and his ornate headband and stylized loincloth only add to his performative appearance. His stern visage contributes to an expression of utter focus and concentration. A spectacular example with nice areas of manganese deposits. Size: 2.5" H (6.4 cm).

Provenance: private Andrade collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s; ex-Knoedler & Company, New York, New York, USA
