Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A mold-made blackware stirrup vessel whose body is a fierce jaguar. He has a snarling face, with incised almond-shaped eyes, a protruding nose, perky ears, and a wide open mouth full of sharp, jagged fangs. His body is long and pellet-like, with his limbs in low relief along the underside of the vessel. A narrow spout with a flared mouth rises from this back, the strap handle extending from its side to the jaguar's neck. Size: 7.5" L x 5" W (19 cm x 12.7 cm)
Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. The principal deity of the Moche, whose ceramics inspired subsequent Peruvian cultures including the Chimu, wears a headdress adorned with a jaguar head and paws and important mortals donned similar headdresses. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery.

- Condition: Chips from rim of spout; small cracks on the handle near the head and on the base of the vessel. Head has been reattached, with well done overpainting along the repair line, which is almost invisible. Despite all this, vessel appears to be in very nice condition, with the damage invisible until examined closely.
