Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A fine blackware effigy vessel in the form of a llama, created by the Chimu culture of ancient Peru as camelids were cherished by the ancient indigenous cultures of the Andes, with a long cylindrical spout and strap handle joining it to the back of the llama's head. This example presents a finely delineated visage with applied, coffee bean shaped eyes, a long, straight nose, perky cup-shaped ears, and a boldly incised smiling mouth framed with arched whiskers. Size: 4.5" L x 4.75" H (11.4 cm x 12.1 cm)
