Description:

Native American, United States, Ohio, Licking County, Adena culture, ca. 800 to 100 BCE. A lovely hand-shaped slate gorget of a quadriconcave form with four concave sides, although the sides are only slightly bowed inwards. Two hand-drilled holes at the center appear to have been bored from one side until perforating the stone. The gorget has a rectangular shape with banded hues of darker ribbons across the gray surface. This stone may have been selected from a riverbed for its naturally smooth properties, and then shaped and further polished to fit the needs of the maker. Stone gorgets were possibly ornaments worn around the necks as symbols of status and were buried with the deceased. A wonderful example of this traditional form! Size: 3.6" L x 2.25" W (9.1 cm x 5.7 cm)
