Description:

Adee Dodge (Navajo, 1912-1992). "Hunter of the Wicked Monsters" gouache on paper, 1969. Signed and dated on lower right. A mesmerizing painting of a mythical hunter by Navajo artist, Adee Dodge (also Hashke-yil-e-dale). The muscular figure is rendered in profile, drawing his bow and lifting his left knee in a dramatic, almost dance-like manner. Dodge's wonderful composition - rendered in a vibrant color palette of aqua, fuchsia, black, and white hues - demonstrates his admiration for Navajo sandpainting. Size (sight view): 12.875" L x 9.875" W (32.7 cm x 25.1 cm) Size (frame): 18" L x 15" W (45.7 cm x 38.1 cm)

Adee Dodge (also known as Hashke-yil-e-dale) was a Navajo artist as well as a linguist and Navajo code talker. While best known for his paintings that paid homage to Navajo culture as well as horses, Adee Dodge also served in the US military during World War II. Interestingly, Adee Dodge's grandfather was Chee Dodge, the last Head Chief of the Navajo and the first Navajo Tribal Chairman.

Adee Dodge earned his bachelor's degree in Anthropology at the University of New Mexico in 1933 as well as a master's degree in Comparative Linguistics and Anthropology from Columbia University in 1935. He also attended the Hogan School in 1934, studying Navajo orthography and linguistics under Gladys Reichard. During World War II, Adee served as a Navajo code talker for 4 years in the South Pacific. After being injured during his service, he decided to pursue art in order to visually document Navajo culture.
