Native American, Southwest, New Mexico, Acoma pueblo, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. The Acoma potters are known for their endearing owl figurines. In the 1880s, with the railroads connecting East to West in the United States, the Acoma began creating more petite pieces ideal for travelers. This skillfully hand built owl with applied wings, tailfeathers, and ears as well as a full-of-personality open beak is decorated with red and black details over a traditional white slip. On the underside of the owl is an old Denver Art Museum label as well as handwritten accession numbers indicating that the piece was acquired by the museum in 1946. Size: 3.5" W x 4.125" H (8.9 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Denver Art Museum, acquisitioned in 1946, deaccessioned in 2006
